Scottish Highland Football Under 17 League - East, Inverurie Loco Works v Fraserburgh, Monday 15th April 2019
By Mark Simpson
Locos hang on to defeat Broch in 5 goal thriller
The Broch under 17's finished off the season with a trip to Harlaw Park against their Inverurie Loco Works counterparts. It was the home side who took the lead on 11 minutes when a diagonal pass from right to left picked out Jay Halliday and he drilled the ball past Owen Campbell from 12 yards.
The Broch tried to reply quickly and four minutes later Scott Murison had a shot from the edge of the penalty area but it was straight at Murray Burns in the home goal. On 18 minutes Zane Laird tried his luck from outside the area but it was deflected wide. From the resultant corner curled into the back post Logan Watt powered a header which Murray Burns held under his crossbar.
Three minutes later Finlay Moultrie went close for Locos but saw his effort well saved by Owen Campbell. The rebound fell kindly to Fraser Davidson but it was deflected over the crossbar for a fruitless corner. The home side missed a guilt edged chance for a second on 25 minutes when Fraser Bruce released Ross Karim through on goal but he dragged his shot wide of goal.
The Broch had another chance three minutes later when Scott Murison crossed from the right and Liam Strachan controlled the ball before slicing it wide of goal. The miss was to prove costly as Locos went further ahead on 31 minutes when a cross ball was flicked onto Luke Scott and he slotted his shot past Owen Campbell.
Worse was to follow three minutes later when a free kick from the left touchline by Finlay Moultrie travelled all the way into the Broch penalty area and as Fraser Bruce attempted to flick it on he missed the ball completely which caught Owen Campbell by surprise and he couldn't react quickly enough to prevent the ball nestling into the corner of the net.
Half Time: Inverurie Loco Works 3 Fraserburgh 0
The visitors came out with renewed vigour after the break and on 49 minutes Ryan Strachan's cross to the back post picked out Logan Watt but he saw his effort blocked. Six minutes later Zane Laird got in between a Locos defender and the keeper inside the area and was hauled down by Murray Burns. Logan Watt slotted home the resultant spot kick to reduce the leeway.
Just after the hour mark a free kick for Locos by Finlay Moultrie on the left was headed wide by Taylor Chapman. On 64 minutes Fraser Moultrie tried his luck from 30 yards but his shot was just over the crossbar of Andrew Dunbar. At the other end Zane Laird's run ended with his cross being deflected wide before one of his teammates could make contact.
With three minutes remaining the Broch pulled back another goal when Scott Murison picked out Zane Laird with a pin point pass and he fired the ball across Murray Burns into the bottom left hand corner. The visitors piled on the pressure in the last few minutes but they couldn't find an equaliser that their second half display warranted.
