Locos derail Broch's push for runner's up spot
The home side went into the game missing several first team players with Ryan Christie, Marc Dickson, Gary Harris, Lewis Davidson, Paul Young, Paul Leask, Cameron Buchan, Ryan Sargent & Nathan Stuart all absent for a variety of reasons. The game also marked the last time the Bellslea faithful would see Graham Johnston & Michael Rae in a Black & White shirt at home with the pair having announced their retirement at the end of the season earlier in the week along with the injured Marc Dickson.
The visitors were the first team to have an effort at goal on 13 minutes when Jamie Michie picked up a loose ball in midfield but he saw his shot go just wide of goal. Four minutes later Scott Barbour hooked a shot towards the Inverurie goal but Neil McLean was on hand to clear the danger.
Aidan Combe then tried his luck from a free kick but drove it straight at the wall. The Broch took the lead on 23 minutes from a breakaway. Scott Barbour found Aidan Combe on the left and he raced forward before cutting inside and firing in a shot which was blocked but the rebound fell kindly to Paul Campbell who rammed the ball home.
The lead was short-lived however as Locos got back into the match in controversial circumstances on 29 minutes. Bryan Hay and Christopher Angus challenged for a through ball inside the home penalty area and the Inverurie man went down under the attentions of the Broch defender. A penalty was awarded and after consulting with his assistant, referee Greg Soutar sent off Bryan Hay for a shirt tug much to the disbelief of the home team. Neil Gauld stepped up and scored the spot kick.
Three minutes later Neil Gauld got on the end of a Neil McLean cross but could only poke the ball wide. The ten men regained the lead on 39 minutes when a free kick was cleared to the edge of the box and Kieran Simpson clipped the ball back in for Paul Campbell to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.
Half Time: Fraserburgh 2 Inverurie Loco Works 1
The second half started with William West making a welcome return from a long term injury replacing Aidan Combe who had picked up a knock. The first chance fell to Jamie Michie who curled in a free kick on 50 minutes which Edward Flinn saved at the second attempt. Michael Rae was then yellow carded for a late challenge on Jamie Michie as play raced from end to end.
On 54 minutes Ryan Cowie's corner from the right was flicked goalward by Kieran Simpson but it drifted wide. Just after the hour mark Mark Souter launched a hopeful ball from the touchline which got caught in the wind and to the horror of the home support dropped into the net past the unlucky Edward Flinn.
Christopher Angus then saw a shot deflected wide on 69 minutes by Jamie Beagrie as the visitors hunted a winner. A minute later tempers flared after an over the top tackle by Andrew Hunter on Michael Rae which saw the Locos man receive a yellow card. Two minutes after that Ryan Broadhurst was lucky to escape with a yellow card after cleaning out Paul Campbell as the Broch striker raced away from the Locos defender.
On 77 minutes Locos took the lead with another fluke of a goal when Christopher Angus' shot from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection and spun over the stranded Edward Flinn into the net. The Broch almost levelled a minute later when Sean Butcher's flick onto Scott Barbour saw the Broch striker shoot just wide.
Graham Johnston then replaced Sean Butcher to a rapturous reception with ten minutes remaining but it was Locos who were in the ascendancy and Ryan Stott went close from a Neil Gauld cross before Jamie Michie settled the result in the last minutes firing home from the edge of the box with the aid of another deflection.
