Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Buckie Thistle v Fraserburgh, Saturday 23rd February 2019
By Mark Simpson
Jags put to the sword by ruthless Broch
The Broch were unchanged from the eleven that had beaten Rothes the previous week which meant that Bryan Hay was named amongst the substitutes now that he was free from suspension.
The visitors were straight onto the attack with Scott Barbour finding Aidan Combe on the left wing in the second minute and his cross was headed straight at Lee Herbert in the Buckie goal by Sean Butcher. A minute later and Paul Young found Aidan Combe in a good position but the young winger saw his shot go just over the crossbar.
The chances kept coming for the Broch and Paul Young’s corner on 5 minutes was headed goalwards by Aidan Combe but once again Lee Herbert made a comfortable save. The opening goal was only delayed by three minutes when a long ball behind the Buckie defence was chased down by Scott Barbour who nicked it away from the Buckie keeper before rolling it into an empty net.
The Broch striker almost got a second on 16 minutes when he fired in a shot on the turn which Lee Herbert did well to save. Buckie levelled from their first attack two minutes later when Sam Morrison crossed from the left and Sam Robertson found space inside the area to sweep the ball past Edward Flinn into the net.
The visitors almost restored their lead on 20 minutes when Lewis Davidson played a one-two with Sean Butcher at the edge of the box before seeing his shot go just over. They did retake the lead on 23 minutes though when a corner from the left was only cleared into the path of Aidan Combe and he jinked past a defender before standing up a cross to the back post which Sean Butcher slammed past the Buckie keeper.
Two minutes later and the Broch were awarded a penalty after Paul Campbell was felled inside the box. The young striker dusted himself down before coolly slotting the spot kick past Lee Herbert in the home goal. Just before the half time break a long ball forward was misjudged by Kieran Adams who was short with his header back to his keeper and Scott Barbour managed to get a toe to the ball but saw his effort go just wide of goal.
Half Time: Buckie Thistle 1 Fraserburgh 3
Buckie made a double change at the break but it was the visitors who created the first chance of the second half on 52 minutes when Michael Rae drove into the box and pulled the ball back to Scott Barbour but he fired well over. The home side tried to get back into the match and Andrew MacAskill fired in a shot on 63 minutes which Jamie Beagrie blocked.
A minute later Sam Robertson almost got his second of the match but Edward Flinn made another vital stock to thwart the Buckie striker’s 20 yard effort. At the other end Paul Young’s harmless cross on 67 minutes was left by Kieran Adams and once again Scott Barbour nipped in front of the home keeper but he couldn’t direct his shot on target.
A minute later the Broch were awarded a free kick on the right wing which resulted in Sam Morrison being booked for kicking the ball away. Ryan Cowie curled in the free kick which fell to Paul Campbell but he saw his shot blocked. The fourth goal duly arrived on 71 minutes when Paul Campbell’s cross from the left fell to Lewis Davidson at the edge of the Buckie area and he volleyed the ball past the bewildered Lee Herbert in the home goal.
Both sides then made substitutions but it was the visitors who continued to dominate proceedings. Ryan Cowie curled in another dangerous free kick on 83 minutes which Aidan Combe met on the half volley but saw his effort crash off the post with Lee Herbert beaten again. Three minutes later Paul Young saw his shot saved after Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour had combined to set him up.
The Broch made a couple of late substitutions to see out time comfortably as they recorded and excellent win over the hapless Jags who saw Kieran Adams receive a yellow card in the dying moments for a poor tackle on Greg Buchan.
