Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Rothes, Saturday 16th February 2019
By Mark Simpson
Campbell & Butcher goals enough to see off Rothes
The Broch were looking to continue where they left off against Formartine United and manager Mark Cowie made one change to the starting line up with Sean Butcher coming in for Greg Buchan who took his place on the bench.
The home side were first to threaten on 4 minutes when Ryan Cowie’s cross to the back post was met by the head of Paul Campbell but Jamie Duff cleared off the line for the visitors. A minute later another cross by Ryan Cowie fell to Scott Barbour inside the area but the Broch hitman couldn’t direct his effort on target.
Sean Butcher then tried his luck from outside the area on 18 minutes but Robert Donaldson in the visitor’s goal made a comfortable save. Rothes were showing signs of coming into the match and three minutes later Steven Anderson picked up a loose ball outside the Broch penalty area but Jamie Beagrie made a well timed block.
On 26 minutes Steven Anderson won the ball in midfield and played it into Kris Duncan who had space and time inside the box but Edward Flinn made a good save to thwart the Rothes forward. A minute later at the other end Lewis Davidson chipped the ball into the Rothes area which was flicked on by Sean Butcher and Aidan Combe saw his volley from 12 yards dip over the crossbar.
Rothes had a great chance to take the lead on 34 minutes when Kris Duncan was through on goal but Edward Flinn stood up well to block the striker’s effort with his body. The visitors had another chance three minutes later when Gary Kerr’s cross was only half cleared and Kris Duncan saw his header drift just wide.
Those misses were to prove costly as the home side took the lead on 42 minutes when Kieran Simpson played the ball up to Scott Barbour who laid it off to Sean Butcher and he found Paul Campbell breaking into the area and the Broch striker saw his first time shot beat Robert Donaldson from 15 yards. A minute later Aidan Combe saw another effort beaten away by the Rothes stopper as the home side searched for a second goal.
Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Rothes 0
The home side made a good start to the second half when Lewis Davidson crossed from the right and Sean Butcher saw his shot well saved by Robert Donaldson. On 54 minutes chaos ensued inside the Rothes penalty area with Sean Butcher and Paul Young having good efforts blocked and when the ball broke to Michael Rae he saw his effort from outside the area deflected over the crossbar.
Two minutes later Scott Barbour was released through on goal but once again the Rothes keeper pulled off a great save to keep the scoreline at 1-0. The Broch did make it 2-0 on 68 minutes when Ashley Ballam was penalized for a push on Paul Young outside the area. Paul Campbell took the free kick but he saw his shot deflected into the path of Sean Butcher who slotted home from 10 yards out.
Greg Buchan, who had earlier replaced Aidan Combe, then saw his net bound shot well saved by Robert Donaldson as the home side turned the screw. On 85 minutes the Rothes stopper was there to deny Scott Barbour again and with three minutes remaining Paul Campbell drove into the Rothes area but pulled his shot wide.
