Ruthless Broch power past Vale with second half blitz
The Broch produced a battling display to come from behind to defeat Deveronvale 4-1. The home side took an early lead through Paul Sutherland, but Aidan Combe levelled just before the break. Second half goals from Gary Harris, William West and Ryan Christie saw the visitors pull away from their hosts.
Mark Cowie made three changes to the one that had performed so admirably against Rangers in the midweek Scottish Cup tie. Greg Buchan, Paul Campbell and Aidan Combe came in to replace William West & Marc Dickson who both found places on the bench whilst Jamie Beagrie returned offshore having been allowed temporary leave from his work commitments to take part in the cup match.
The Broch started well with Gary Harris being found on the right wing and he crossed to the back post for Aidan Combe to head off target. A minute later a ball down the channel to Paul Sutherland saw the home winger cut inside the box before firing over the bar.
The hosts were certainly up for the match and Paul Sutherland and Harry Noble combined on the left wing with the latter seeing his shot from the edge of the penalty area fly over the bar. It was no surprise then that on 9 minutes Paul Sutherland found himself free down the middle of the Broch defence and he rounded Peter Tait to slip the ball into the empty net to give the Vale the lead.
On seventeen minutes a Greg Buchan corner to the back post saw Paul Campbell tee up Bryan Hay but he fired his shot high over the bar. Four minutes later Greg Buchan blocked a Vale defensive clearance which fell into the path of Gary Harris and he saw his shot on the turn well saved by Grant Pennet.
With twenty eight minutes gone Gary Harris, Greg Buchan, Aidan Combe and Paul Young combined to set up Ryan Christie but the Broch captain saw his curling shot fly just past the post. Two minutes later Ryan Cowie's free kick was blocked but the full back saw his cross from the rebound laid off by Paul Campbell into the path of Bryan Hay but he skied his effort well off target.
Four minutes before the break Aidan Combe took advantage of a mistake by Lewis Dunbar who miskicked inside the area after Greg Buchan had crossed from the left and the Broch striker rifled home a shot from close range.

The goal just before the break seemed to buck up the visitors as they were quickly onto the attack at the start of the second half with Ryan Cowie finding Greg Buchan on the left and his cross into the area was met by Gary Harris but his header was straight at Grant Pennet.
On 49 minutes Ryan Cowie's free kick was cleared to the edge of the area where Greg Buchan met it but saw his drive deflected over for a fruitless corner. A minute later a mistake by Bryan Hay saw Paul Sutherland break into the Broch penalty box but he saw his shot from 12 yards rebound off the post with Peter Tait well beaten.
Just after the hour the Broch took the lead when Greg Buchan played an inviting ball over the Vale defence into the path of Gary Harris who ran on before dispatching the ball past Grant Pennet from just inside the penalty area. Six minutes later the same two players were at it again when Gary Harris played the ball down the right to Greg Buchan and he cut into the box before setting up the Broch marksmen who saw his effort deflected behind.
Vale passed up a chance to level on 69 minutes when former Broch player Grant Noble wriggled free inside the visitors area but Peter Tait came off his line to block the strikers shot. It proved to be costly for the home side as two minutes later Lewis Davidson found Aidan Combe on the right and he crossed into the penalty area where Gary Harris dummied the ball at the near post and William West swept the ball home from close range.
The visitors were in total command by now and Lewis Davidson crossed into the Vale area on 78 minutes with Gary Harris seeing his header deflected wide. With two minutes remaining Paul Young cross was cleared to Michael Rae 20 yards out but his drive was comfortably saved by Grant Pennet.
A minute later Gary Harris raced clear into the Vale are but Steven Davidson got back to make a goal saving tackle. The fourth goal was only delayed for a minute though when a corner from the right was curled into the near post by Ryan Cowie and Ryan Christie met it with a glancing header to complete the scoring.
