Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield 2nd Round, Turriff United FC v Fraserburgh FC, Wednesday 6th December 2017, The Haughs, Turriff
Turriff dump Broch out of Shield
The Broch were their own worst enemy in this Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield match gifting the home side two goals as they self destructed in the second half to tamely exit the competition at a soggy Haughs in Turriff. Mark Cowie rang the changes from the previous match against Keith with Cameron Buchan, Ryan Christie, Paul Young, Ryan Sargent and Andrew Hannar, who was making his competitive debut for the club, coming into the starting line up at the expense of Dean & Ryan Cowie, Jamie Beagrie, Greg Buchan & Aidan Combe.
The home side had the first opportunity in the second minute when Louis Myers turned Ryan Christie and drove towards the penalty area before firing well over Peter Tait's crossbar. Five minutes later Lewis Davidson found William West outside the Turriff box with a throw-in and the Broch player turned and fired in a shot which went wide of the far post.
Former Broch stalwart Russell McBride was next to try his luck for the home side heading a corner from the left straight at Peter Tait. Andrew Hannar was looking busy on his debut and found Lewis Davidson with a lovely pass but the Broch full back's dangerous cross was deflected behind for a fruitless corner.
On 16 minutes Cameron Buchan swung a cross in from the left which Marc Dickson got on the end of but could only head the ball wide of Kevin Main's goal. Three minutes later Andrew Hannar found William West on the left and he cut inside before curling a cross into the Turriff penalty box which Paul Young headed over.
Cameron Buchan set up the next chance for the visitors when his cross was only cleared as far as William West who laid the ball off to Marc Dickson but his shot was deflected over. Midway through the half Robert Allan cleared another cross only as far as Michael Rae who fired in a shot from 25 yards which Kevin Main comfortably saved.
On 26 minutes Ryan Sargent came closest to breaking the deadlock when his shot from the left side of the Turriff penalty area went fizzing across Kevin Main but the veteran custodian did well to push the ball away from the danger zone.
Half Time: Turriff United 0 Fraserburgh 0
Five minutes into the second half William West saw his shot on the turn from 20 yards go well over. Turriff were coming into the game and on 62 minutes a cross by James Chalmers to the back post was headed wide by Louis Myers. The Turriff striker came even closer two minutes later when he got on the end of a Robert Allan free kick but Peter Tait did magnificently to tip the ball onto the crossbar before it was hacked clear.
At the other end Lewis Davidson's corner from the left was headed wide by Broch captain Ryan Christie. Andrew Hannar then saw his shot from the edge of the Turriff area curl wide before on 68 minutes the home side broke and the ball fell kindly for Adam Cross just outside the Broch penalty box which he drove past Peter Tait into the net.
Five minutes later Paul Young spurned the Broch's best chance of an equaliser when the ball broke to him 10 yards out but he screwed his shot wide of Kevin Main's goal. On 77 minutes a cross into the Turriff area was cleared out to Cameron Buchan 25 yards out and his raking drive was pushed over the bar by Kevin Main.
Turriff finished the tie with two goals in the last 10 minutes. Firstly on 80 minutes David Ross pounced on a Bryan Hay error to slot the ball past Peter Tait. Six minutes later Ryan Christie was caught in possession outside his own area and David Ross lobbed Peter Tait and the ball crept into the bottom corner of the net despite the Broch keeper getting his fingertips to the initial shot.
